Feathers earings are an elegant way to add elegance to any look, making this tassel and feather earring the perfect accessory for formal occasions, or worn casually with jeans for an easy everyday style statement.
Begin by determining the length that your feather will be. It will depend on the intended purpose, but as a general guideline, use thread that has approximately 70-75 wraps per square inch to achieve the best results.
Based on the theme of your project Based on your theme, neutral or natural feathers are likely to be the most appropriate. Although dyed feathers provide plenty of visual interest, their bright hues may fade more quickly than their natural counterparts so dyed feathers may not be the best option for your project.
A second consideration is the space available; larger feathers may create more drama and formality while smaller ones can seem more relaxed. When selecting feathers for use in your projects, be mindful of both their length and form; Certain feathers feature flat surfaces, while others have the curvilinear, ruffled designs that provide an element of texture. If you don't take care of them properly could result in knotted or static-charged ones being used, ensure to thoroughly inspect each one before using them.
When you've got your feathers as you would like put them in a crimp tube and close it with pliers to ensure an unsecure hold. This lets you do other things with them for example, like sliding beads over them for beaded earrings or wire the headpin onto a barrette to make a headpiece for use; creating bird's nest pendants or clusters of flowers as pendants is also an option; you could even affix feathers directly onto wire for bracelet creation! Make it your own! Experiment with different arrangements as you design different effects
Feathers make beautiful accessories which require special attention to keep them looking great. When they are stored, whether hanging or lying flat they shouldn't be smashed with other items or by hard surfaces; and must be handled with care to prevent chipping or cracking of feathers.
To keep them looking good, feathers can look great using twine to wrap securely around them. This kind of twine usually comes as an element of kits, or can be purchased separately; the waxy coating of it allows it to wrap tightly around objects.
Create a piece of wire long enough to wrap it twice around the feather, then reduce it to half its original length, by using needle nose pliers to grab both ends - one is in a straight line with its spine while the other runs perpendicularly to form an elongated loop (Photos 3 and 4). After doing this the feather can be hung from an ear wire or jump rings (great for adding to necklaces) using its hook through the hole created at the top of the wrapping (Photo 5.).
If you'd like to add another bead with a crimp, follow the steps above until you have created the perfect feather earring remembering to make the matching pair!
When your earrings are finished, simply connect their wires with a jumpring and shut it. You can now relax wearing your custom, one-of-a-kind feather earrings!
